Chief Executive, Director
Los Angeles County Museum of Art
Michael Govan has led LACMA since 2006, transforming the Miracle Mile institution into one of the world’s most visited art museums. Under his leadership, the collection has grown by nearly 35,000 works – with significant holdings in Latin American, Asian, African and Pacific art – and annual attendance has exceeded 1.5 million. Govan’s major achievement was completed: the $720 million David Geffen galleries designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Peter Zumthor, which opened this past April. The innovative building – engineered on base isolators to withstand earthquakes – changes how visitors experience art. Before LACMA, Govan served as president of the Dia Art Foundation, where he established the acclaimed Dia:Beacon.
