Fain is one of the nation’s most prominent urban designers, specializing in community planning, downtown-oriented and transit-oriented development. At the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, he met classmate Scott Johnson; the pair emerged as principals at the William Pereira architectural firm before launching Johnson Fain in 1989. The firm immediately worked on some key projects that have transformed the Century City skyline, including Fox Plaza, 1999 Avenue of the Stars and Constellation Place. Fain’s urban design work has gone international, including the Beijing Central Business District and the Shanghai Jaingwan New Town in China. He has also taught at Harvard University and the Southern California Institute of Architecture.
