Matheny is the president and chief executive of RAND, a role he took on in 2022. RAND is a nonprofit research organization that hopes to improve policy through research and analysis. Before joining RAND, Matheny led White House policy on technology and national security at the National Security Council and the Office of Science and Technology Policy. Before that, he was founding director of the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University. He has also held roles at Oxford University, the World Bank, the Applied Physics Laboratory, the Center for Biosecurity and Princeton University. Matheny has served on the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence and has received numerous awards.
