O’Connell took the helm of the California Credit Union in 2017 after its merger with North Island Credit Union, where he was chief executive. In this role, he navigated the integration of the two credit unions, expanding to new geographic areas and overseeing the credit union’s charter change to diversify its membership criteria. With more than $5 billion in assets, CCU, which is headquartered in Glendale, serves 200,000 members. Under O’Connell’s leadership, its assets have grown 32%. He also expanded internal training programs, implemented new employee resource groups and employee recognition programs, and extended team volunteer opportunities. O’Connell serves on the board of trustees for Classroom for the Future and the Los Angeles Zoo.
