Marks was a part of the founding group that established Oaktree Capital Management in 1995. Since then, the firm has grown to manage over $192 billion in assets and employs over 1,200 people. It is the No. 8 largest money management firm in Los Angeles, according to the Business Journal’s rankings. Marks leads Oaktree’s big-picture decisions relating to investments and corporate direction. In 2019, Brookfield Asset Management acquired a 61% stake in Oaktree for approximately $4.9 billion in cash. Marks now sits on Brookfield’s board, and owns a 7.5% stake in Oaktree. He has built a media brand over the years, hosting a podcast called “The Memo” and writing newsletters widely read by Wall Street investors. Prior to Oaktree, Marks led the distressed debt, high yield bonds and convertible securities teams at TCW Group. He was also chief investment officer for domestic fixed income at TCW. Marks began his career at Citibank, where he started a portfolio of high-yield bonds. Marks is a trustee and chair of the investment committee at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a member of the investment committee of the Royal Drawing School and is a professor at King’s Business School.
