California safety officials ordered LAX air services contractor Menzies Aviation to pay fines of nearly $95,000 for violations of worker safety rules.
Cal/OSHA said Wednesday that it had cited Menzies for 23 violations, including an inadequate safety guard on a high-lift industrial truck, failure to train workers on how to properly handle hazardous substances and improper storage of hazardous substances in cargo warehouses.
Two of the violations were considered “serious,” meaning that if not remedied they could result in death or serious physical harm. One was deemed “willful.”
The action came after company employees filed a complaint, prompting a six-month investigation. More than one hundred Menzies workers went on strike in May last year to protest working conditions at LAX, citing concerns about the serious health and safety risks they faced.
