General Electric Co. said Thursday that it received a $1.4 billion contract to supply wind turbines and related services for an Oregon wind farm that will supply renewable energy to Southern California Edison.

Caithness Energy’s Shepherds Flat, a 30-square-mile project, will be the largest global order to date and first North American deployment of GE’s new 2.5xl wind turbines, which already are in use in Europe and Asia, according to GE, which is based in Fairfield, Conn. The turbines will be installed in 2011 and 2012.

The 845-megawatt wind farm eventually will contribute more than 10 percent to SoCal Edison’s overall renewable energy portfolio. Caithness, a New York City, N.Y. company, will supply electricity to SoCal Edison under three separate 20-year contracts.

The companies estimate that the $2 billion project will provide enough clean energy to power about 235,000 average California households and avoid the creation of more than 1.5 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

Southern California Edison is a subsidiary of Rosemead-based Edison International, whose shares closed down 5 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $15.61 on the New York Stock Exchange.
