A Tempe, Ariz. solar panel maker has acquired several solar projects that Edison International had been developing in California and the Southwest.
First Solar Inc., the largest U.S. solar panel maker, said Thursday the acquisitions will give it several utility-scale projects. The company has been providing engineering and construction services at the sites for Edison Mission Group, a unit of Rosemead-based Edison since 2008.
The projects are mostly located on private land, range from 20 to 150-megawatts in capacity, and are not yet contracted with utilities. First Solar will now handle all development. The companies did not disclose financial details or the locations involved.
“Acquiring the EMG development pipeline extends First Solar’s leadership in the U.S. utility market,” said Lisa Bodensteiner, First Solar’s vice president of business development for North America.
In December, First Solar completed development and construction of its first California utility-scale solar power plant. The 21-megawatt AC Blythe project was sold to NRG Energy and is supplying electricity to Southern California Edison.
Edison shares closed down 2 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $35.43 on the New York Stock Exchange.
