Staar Surgical Co., a Monrovia-based company that manufactures implantable lenses for the eye, announced an agreement to sell lenses to an eye clinic based in Japan.

The June 26 announcement said Staar Surgical entered into a multi-year agreement with Kobe Kanagawa Eye Clinic, based in Tokyo and Osaka, to provide its EVO Visian ICL lenses. The clinic has performed nearly 500,000 refractive surgeries.

“Kobe Kanagawa Eye Clinic is one of the largest refractive eye surgery providers in Japan, an increasingly important market for our ICL lenses,” said Caren Mason, Staar’s chief executive, in a statement.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Early last month, the company announced a record 33-percent jump in sales for the first quarter on growth occurring in China, Korea and Japan, with $27.1 million in sales for the quarter ended March 31, compared to $20.4 million during the same period last year.

Net income for the period was 0.6 million, compared with a loss of $2.2 million for the same period in 2017.

Staar Surgical, founded in 1982, designs, develops and manufactures implantable lenses to lesson or eliminate reliance on glasses or contact lenses. It has 350 employees, with plants in Monrovia and Aliso Viejo, and markets lenses to more than 75 countries.

More than 800,000 of its Visian ICLs have been implanted to date, according to the firm.
