Providence Tarzana Medical Center’s $542 million expansion, dubbed the “Reimagined Project,” has been greenlit by the Los Angeles City Council, the hospital announced.

Final approval to begin construction was granted last week, according to Providence Tarzana. The hospital – which operates under the Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health and Services health care system – launched a $75 million fundraising campaign last year through its Providence Tarzana Foundation to help pay for the expansion.

“Every day we have more and more people stepping up,” Ann Braun, vice president of the foundation, told the Business Journal.

Most of the donations so far have come from past patients and their families, Braun said. So far, $5 million has been raised.

The renovations will include a new patient wing, an expanded emergency department and bigger diagnostic facilities, according to the hospital. In keeping with the city council’s approval of the expansion, Providence Tarzana also has committed to increase its mental health services and outreach to the homeless, the hospital said in a statement.

Construction will begin this summer. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2022.
