MemorialCare Health System has promoted John Bishop, chief financial officer of Long Beach Memorial hospital, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, Community Hospital Long Beach and Seaside Health Plan in Long Beach, to chief executive.
Bishop, who has been an executive with MemorialCare Health System since 2004, succeeds former chief executive Diana Hendel, who resigned earlier this year for health reasons.
Former Gulfstream Employee Sentenced for Embezzlement
The former director of finance and accounting at the Long Beach operations of Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. was sentenced Monday to 11 years in prison and immediately taken into custody for embezzling more than $10 million from the jet maker. Marvin Jay Caukin, 66, of Calabasas, was found guilty of pilfering the money over a period of 13 years, according to investigators.
Caukin, who was hired by Gulfstream in 2000, had pled guilty last January to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud. He confessed he had participated in a scheme from the fall of 2000 until around May 2013 in which he submitted fake invoices to Gulfstream. He used the money he took to pay for his car, mortgage, credit cards and escort services, according to investigators.
Caukin’s attorney could not be reached for comment. Representatives with Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., based in Savannah, Ga., declined to comment.
Tutor Perini to Build Philadelphia Hotel
Tutor Perini Corp. announced on Monday that it has won a $239 million contract to build a 755-room, dual-flagged W and Element hotel project in Philadelphia.
The Sylmar construction company will work for Chestlen Development, a local company developing the hotels, which will share a 770,000-square-foot, 51-story tower.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. in Stamford, Conn. operates both chains, with the W aimed at young, hip and affluent customers while Element is branded as an environmentally sensitive lodging. The latter chain features recycling building materials and energy- and water efficient fixtures and plumbing.
Element Philadelphia will be the larger of the two, with 460 rooms, and W Philadelphia will have 295. There will be three levels of below-grade parking.
Construction began in April and an estimated completion date of early 2018. The contract value was included as part of Tutor Perini’s already reported first-quarter backlog.
Shares closed down 20 cents, or nearly 1 point, to $23.55 on the New York Stock Exchange.
