Long Beach Memorial Medical Center is taking over management of Community Hospital of Long Beach as the two entities enter discussions for a transfer of ownership, the hospitals announced Wednesday evening.
“Given the ongoing economic impacts affecting providers and the anticipated effects that health reform will have on hospitals, the intent of the agreement is to enhance the ability of both not-for-profit institutions to continue providing quality care for the residents of Long Beach well into the future,” said Diana Hendel, chief executive of Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach.
During the management services agreement, Community Hospital, 1720 Termino Ave., will operate as a separately licensed entity, the statement said. Both hospitals are nonprofit agencies. No layoffs will take place at Community Hospital, which will keep its own doctors, staff, name and location.
Memorial could take over operations there as early as July 1.
