A Pico-Union woman has pleaded no contest to practicing dentistry without a license from her living room, which resulted in a serious injury from a botched root canal, the City Attorney announced Feb. 20.

Clara Medina, 58, entered a plea of no contest for one count of battery likely to produce serious bodily injury.

She was sentenced to 30 days in jail, or 20 days of community labor, and three years probation. She was also ordered to stay away from the victim and pay restitution.

“It’s outrageous for someone with no license or formal training to subject a patient to a root canal – a procedure we allege sent a victim to the hospital,” said City Attorney Mike Feuer, in a statement.

In March 2017, a woman who was uninsured made an appointment to see Medina in her home for an aching tooth, prosecutors say, after being referred by co-workers.

Medina, using various needles, then tried to perform a root canal on the woman seated on a living room lounge chair, they said. Injuries suffered during the procedure required hospitalization for what may be permanent nerve damage.
