The nonprofit corporation in charge of opening Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital said Monday that Dr. Elaine Batchlor has been chosen as chief executive.

The Martin Luther King Jr.-Los Angeles Healthcare Corp. said that Batchlor, now chief medical officer at the L.A. Care public health plan, will continue in that position until she assumes her post at the Willowbrook hospital on Oct. 15.

Los Angeles County closed the old Martin Luther King-Harbor Medical Center in August 2007, after federal regulators determined that the inpatient facility failed to meet minimum standards for patient care, including errors involved in multiple deaths.

MLK-LA Healthcare is a new partnership between the county and University of California, with each member of its independent board approved by both entities. Plans are to open in 2014 a new 130-bed acute care hospital, now under construction by the county, on the 120-acre old MLK campus.

The county, and other health care agencies leasing space from the county, continue to operate a variety of out-patient clinics elsewhere on the campus.
