Adventist Health to Shift Nearly 1,200 IT and Other Workers to Cerner Corp.

A state report lists nearly 1,200 pending layoffs at Adventist Health hospitals across the state, including hundreds at Adventist Health Glendale and White Memorial Medical Center in Boyle Heights. Only none of the workers will actually lose their jobs, according to the Roseville-based health system.

Instead, they are being asked to work for Cerner Corp., a Kansas City-based a global health information technology firm, in a cost-cutting move expected to save Adventist Health hundreds of millions of dollars in the next few years.

“The employees affected have been offered jobs at Cerner,” said Alicia Gonzalez, spokeswoman for Adventist Health Southern California. “The only difference here is they are employees of Cerner. They’re still onsite, at their locations, with comparable pay. No one has been asked to relocate.”

The state Employment Development Department reported 1,166 permanent layoffs effective April 1at nine Adventist Health hospitals from Napa to Los Angeles Counties. Of those, 167 were at Adventist Health Glendale and 160 at Adventist Health White Memorial.

Instead, they are part of a major transition announced early this year by the faith-based hospital system to shift its IT and revenue-sharing employees to Cerner.

With Cerner taking over the day-to-day management of revenue processing and IT operations, Adventist expects to save $300 million in the next three years.

Adventist Health runs 19 hospitals, more than 280 clinics, 13 home care agencies, seven hospice agencies and four joint-venture retirement centers in California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii. It had revenues of $3.95 billion in 2016.
