Inglewood Hires Security Firm to Assess Stadium Risks

The proposal to build an NFL stadium in Inglewood isn’t a done deal, but that’s not stopping that city from hiring a security firm to assess a stadium’s safety risks.

Inglewood has hired San Jose-based Tal Global, which has provided similar safety assessments for high-profile events such as the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and last year’s World Cup in Brazil, according to the company’s website.

It’s the latest step forward for the $1.86 billion stadium project, proposed in January by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke and San Francisco investment firm Stockbridge Capital Partners. Inglewood’s City Council voted last month to approve plans for an 80,000-seat stadium to be built at Hollywood Park, where Stockbridge had already planned a massive residential and retail development.

Tal and city leaders declined to comment beyond a press release announcing the deal. But in hiring Tal, city leaders could be hoping to quash concerns about stadium safety and terrorism risks that had been raised in reports commissioned by downtown L.A.’s AEG, which until recently was promoting a competing stadium site.

The AEG report, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, said a stadium in Inglewood could be a potential target for terrorists because of its proximity to Los Angeles International Airport.

In a statement, Inglewood Mayor James Butts said hiring Tal Global shows city leaders are serious about the stadium proposal.

“This selection is further demonstration of the City Council’s commitment to provide the best entertainment venues in the greater Los Angeles area to be exceeded only by our commitment to public safety,” Butts said in a statement.
