The S&P 500 was up 21 points to 2,043.

The Nasdaq was up 43 points to 4,995.

The LABJ Stock Index was up five points to 239.

Alternative energy developer Rentech Inc. was Tuesday’s biggest local gainer among stocks trading above $1. Shares of the cancer drug developer rose 15 percent to close at $3.47.

Tuesday’s biggest loser, among stocks trading above $1, was West L.A. patent litigation firm Marathon Patent Group Inc. Shares of the company fell 7 percent to close at $1.50.
