The Dow Jones industrial average fell 48 points in Tuesday trading to close at 17,551.

The S&P 500 fell five points to 2,093.

The Nasdaq fell 10 points to 5,106.

The LABJ Stock Index was flat at 246.

Gainers and Losers

Tuesday’s biggest local gainer was IPC Healthcare Inc. Shares of the North Hollywood company rose 36 percent on the day, closing at $79.25, after the announcement early Tuesday that Team Health Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn., would purchase the company for about $1.6 billion in cash, or $80.25 a share.

Tuesday’s biggest loser was West L.A. animal health care company VCA Inc. Shares of the company fell 5 percent on the day, closing at $58.15.
