Medbox, Second Sight Among Week’s Big Movers

The Los Angeles Business Journal’s index of the largest local public companies fell slightly for the week. The weighted LABJ index fell less than 1 percent to close at 225, with losers just outpacing gainers 77 to 73. Eight companies closed the week unchanged.

Among stocks trading above a dollar, Sylmar’s Second Sight Medical Products Inc., a maker of an artificial retina for blind patients, was one of the week’s leading gainers. Shares rose 85 percent to close at $16.17 on Friday after the company announced that three clinics had successfully implanted its products in patients.

Motorcar Parts of America Inc., a Torrance manufacturer of aftermarket auto parts, also had a good week. Shares rose 14 percent to close at $26.25 after the company reported earnings that beat analysts’ estimates.

Medbox Inc., a West Hollywood maker of marijuana dispensing machines, was among the week’s losing stocks. Shares fell 18 percent to close the week at $1.81 after several law firms announced class action lawsuits against the company.
