In Tuesday trading, the Dow Jones industrial average dropped 170 points, or 1.1 percent, to 14,776.
The Nasdaq was down 79 points, or 2.2 percent, to 3,579.
The S&P 500 fell 26 points, or 1.6 percent, to 1,630.
The LABJ Stock Index closed down three points to 162.
