The Los Angeles Business Journal’s index of the largest local public companies closed up for the week ended May 14 even though the overall markets fell due to European Union economic worries.

The weighted LABJ index closed up 2.2 percent to 121.77, with gainers outpacing decliners 107 to 69.

Among the biggest gainers was Response Genetics Inc., which jumped nearly 23 percent to $2.69 after the Los Angeles developer of diagnostic tests for use in the treatment of cancer announced a licensing deal with GlaxoSmithKline.

Westlake Village online advertising marketer ValueClick Inc. closed up 15 percent to $10.75 following a midweek presentation at an investor conference.

With reports that April apparel sales were up from a year ago, Van Nuys brand licensing company Cherolee Inc. rose more than 13 percent to $20.70. Los Angeles manufacturer and retailer American Apparel Inc. gained 10 percent to close at $2.79.

Among the largest decliners was Valencia biotech MannKind Inc., which closed down 10 percent to $5.83 despite the lack of market-moving news.

Dole Food Co Inc. fell 8.6 percent to $9.74 after the Westlake Village fresh food company reported disappointing first quarter net income.
