Three L.A. Companies Added to Russell Indexes, Several Dropped

Several local stocks, including newly public Air Lease Inc. and Boingo Wireless Inc., were affected by Friday’s annual update to the Russell Indexes as investors began shifting their positions.

The Russell indexes are widely used by investment managers and institutional investors for index funds, and as benchmarks for both passive and active investment strategies. The Russell 3000 also serves as the U.S. component to the Russell Global Index.

Added to the Russell 3000 and Russell Global were Century City jet leasing company Air Lease, which went public in April, and Los Angeles Internet hotspot provider Boingo Wireless, which held its IPO last month. In addition, Los Angeles medical imaging center operator RadNet Inc. was added to both indexes. Boingo also made the Russell Microcap Index, as was THQ Inc., the Agoura Hills video game developer, and Visesse Semiconductor Inc., a Camarillo chipmaker.

Dropped from the Russell 3000 was American Apparel Inc., a Los Angeles apparel company; Joe’s Jeans Inc., a Commerce apparel company; Cytrx Corp. a West Los Angeles developer of cancer drugs; and Kaiser Federal Financial Group Inc., a Covina bank holding company.

Dropped from the Russell Microcap Index was Crown Media Holdings, the Studio City operator of the Hallmark cable channels; Bidz.com Inc., a Culver City online jewelry retailer; Arrowhead Research Corp., a Pasadena nanotechnology holding company; Enova Systems Inc., a Torrance developer of vehicle drive systems; Peerless Systems Corp., an El Segundo digital imaging company, and Ever-Glory International Group Inc., a West Covina apparel company.

In Friday trading, Air Lease shares fell 5.8 percent to $23.55 on the New York Stock Exchange Friday. On the Nasdaq, RadNet fell 2.8 percent to $4.10 and Boingo fell 1.4 percent to $9. Vitesse shares rose 1 percent to $4.11 and THQ shares were unchanged at $3.48.

Among deleted companies trading on the Nasdaq, Joe’s fell 8 percent to 81 cents, Peerless fell 5.5 percent to $3.45; Arrowhead rose 8.7 percent to 50 cents, Crown rose 3.9 percent to $1.88, Bidz.com rose 2 percent to $1.02, Cytrx rose 1 percent to 74 cents, and Kaiser Federal rose 1 percent to $12.44.

On the New York Alternet, American Apparel fell 7.6 percent to 84 cents, Ever-Glory fell 6 percent to $1.87 and Enova rose 1 percent to 90 cents.
