Burkle to Leave KB Home Board

KB Home on Thursday said that Ron Burkle will not run for re-election to the Los Angeles homebuilder’s board at its annual stockholders meeting next month, so he can devote more time to other business interests.

It’s the second outside corporate board that the billionaire has quit in as many months.

The founder and managing partner of Los Angeles-based Yucaipa Companies announced last month that he would leave the board of Internet company Yahoo Inc., giving the same reason as for his KB Home departure.

Burkle has been engaged in a high-profile battle with the board of one of his investments, Barnes & Noble, to increase his stake in the national book retailer. In response, Barnes & Noble’s directors last year adopted a shareholder-rights “poison pill” plan to discourage any outside investor from accumulating more than 20 percent of shares without board approval.

Burkle has been a KB Home director for 15 years. “It has been a pleasure to serve on KB Home’s board,” he said in a press release. “This is a well-run company with an excellent business model, and I look forward to following its success in the future.”

Burkle ranked No. 5 on the Business Journal’s annual list of Wealthiest Angelenos last year, with an estimated net worth of $3.65 billion.
