LABJ Insider: Local Grad Schools Get Their Grades
Los Angeles Business Journal Editor Scott Robson

Local grad schools may have lost more than a year of in-person learning to the pandemic, but they managed to mostly register gains in a new set of national rankings.

U.S. News and World Report last week rolled out its list of the nation’s best grad schools for 2022, and high-profile programs at USC and UCLA figured heavily in the mix. Pepperdine University and Loyola Marymount University also put in appearances.

In the newest rundown of full-time grad schools for business, USC’s Marshall School landed at No. 16, up one spot from last year. UCLA’s Anderson School, which was listed at No. 16 last year, slipped to No. 18 this year.

For part-time MBA programs, UCLA ranked No. 5 in the country, while USC came in at No. 9.

On the law school front, UCLA placed No. 14 on the U.S. News list, up from No. 15 last year. USC’s Gould School was No. 19 after ranking at No. 18 last year. Pepperdine’s Caruso School came in at No. 46, a step up from No. 47 last year. And LMU landed at No. 8 on the list of part-time law school programs.

For medical research programs, UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine took a step back to No. 21 on this year’s list after placing at No. 6 last year. USC’s Keck School of Medicine, on the other hand, improved to No. 29 in the rankings, up from No. 31 last year.

Los Angeles Football Club, which has developed a reputation for innovation and success both on and off the field since the team’s inaugural season in 2018, officially has new co-presidents.

John Thorrington and Larry Freedman have been acting as interim co-presidents since August. LAFC made their titles permanent last week.

Thorrington joined the club in 2015 as executive vice president of soccer operations and general manager. Freedman previously served as chief business officer at LAFC, which he joined in 2014.

Speaking of football, the American version has settled on a date for its showcase event. Kathryn Schloessman, chief executive and president of the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission, announced last week that Super Bowl LVI will take place at SoFi Stadium on Feb. 13, 2022.

The LASEC also said it has selected 225 companies in Los Angeles County to participate in the organization’s Business Connect program leading up to the NFL’s biggest game.

The platform will help an array of local businesses — ranging from florists and general contractors to painters and staffing services — compete for contracts tied to the game. LASEC will work with them to prepare, pitch and network over the next year.

Negin Singh, who has served as executive director of the Santa Monica Pier Corp. since January 2018, will leave her post in June. Singh’s tenure included the most challenging economic environment in decades for the 111-year-old landmark, which was shuttered completely from March to June last year and has been partially closed since. While restaurants and shops at the pier have reopened, the merry-go-round and Pacific Park are scheduled to resume operations this month.
