Given the critical need for accessible mental health care nationwide, CVS Health announced in May 2023 that it would enhance Project Health, the company’s free, community-based health screening program by adding mental health screenings to its services, including in Los Angeles.
CVS Health plans to host nearly 2000 Project Health screening events this year across the country at CVS Pharmacy locations and community organizations in under-resourced areas, including over 50 in the LA area, which is more than double the number of events held last year in LA. These in-store and mobile unit events tap into the CVS Pharmacy footprint and a vast network of local organizations to help ensure transportation is not a barrier to receiving health services.
Project Health’s free biometric screenings include blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose level, and body mass index to detect early risks of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Now Project Health also offers PHQ-2 assessments, a screening to help identify people who require additional evaluation for depression. Following these screenings, participants may meet with a nurse practitioner who can provide access to resources for treatment and advice on follow-up care.
Depression is a common mental health issue. As recently as February 2023, more than 30% of adults in California reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. Californians also struggle to get the help they need. Project Health’s new mental health screenings build upon CVS Health’s commitment to mental well-being and making care more convenient and accessible.
