Old school hip-hop station KDAY (93.5) of Redondo Beach and Inland Empire sister station KDEY (93.5) have been sold to investors who might switch KDAY to a Chinese-language format.

Magic Broadcasting of Panama City, Fla., has agreed to sell the stations for $19.5 million to RBC Communications, an Irwindale holding company 80 percent owned by Anthony Yuen, an anchor on Chinese television, according to radio trade publication Inside Radio. The other portion of RBC is owned by executives at Phoenix Television, which operates cable networks in China.

The sale to Yuen and Phoenix executives has fueled speculation that KDAY’s format will be switched to a Chinese-language format.

KDAY made its name by playing West Coast rap from the likes of Dr. Dre and it continues to focus on rap classics. However, ratings have been lagging and KDAY ranked 28th in the L.A. radio ratings last month.

The deal is pending FCC approval and a format change will not take place until the deal closes.
