Patrick Soon-Shiong Innovation Awards 2017: FINALISTS – CUJO LLC

CUJO LLC provides a plug-and-play smart home security device that protects the connected home from the virtual intrusions, such as malware, viruses, and hacking techniques. The company’s device uses self-learning technology to keep watch over computers, smartphones, baby monitors, TVs, and other connected devices by constantly updating itself to block new threats. It also offers a mobile application.

Traditionally, PC security software, like antivirus or antimalware, is designed to only protect you the device it’s installed on. With so many connected devices in your home, you and your family’s personal lives are now on display through the networked home gadgets you have. Once connected to a router, CUJO’s smart firewall protects an entire home from nosy and unwanted intrusions.

CUJO analyzes a user’s local network traffic data locally and in real time. It then sends statistics on that data to the cloud for further analysis. For privacy as well as performance reasons, CUJO doesn’t send the contents of those packets to the cloud. If a threat or suspicious activity is detected, CUJO will tell the cloud what it has blocked so the user can receive a notification on his or her mobile app to confirm it.

CUJO takes just a few minutes to start. All a user has to do is plug the CUJO device into a router and follow a provided step-by-step guide on the CUJO app. CUJO works with various network setups, including WiFi routers; modems and routers as separate devices; modems and routers as single devices; and wireless extenders or access points in addition to the routers.
