NoMad Los Angeles is now a luxury hotel Downtown, located in the historic Giannini Place, former home of the Bank of Italy (which later became Bank of America), at Olive and 7th streets. Completed in 1922, Giannini Place was designed by the architectural firm Morgan, Walls and Clements. The grand 12-story building had stood empty and blighted for decades. The re-imagining of the 165,190 square foot building into the 241-room NoMad Hotel Los Angeles transforms the building’s original bank lobby with its towering columns, ornate ceiling and marble floors into the primary bar/restaurant and central gathering space of the hotel. The restored facade includes decorative brick and terra cotta details and massive bronze entry doors that have been a longtime fixture on bustling 7th St. New glass storefronts reflect the original design intent with steel sashes and decorative grilles. An event space, bar and swimming pool occupy the roof. Guest rooms located in former office space floors bring back the building’s historic character, much of which above the ground floor had been lost over time.

This unique site serves as a vital entry point to downtown Santa Monica, greeting riders of the Expo Line and motorists exiting the freeway, while also sitting blocks away from numerous tourist attractions. Two hotels were designed simultaneously that would be tailored to the City and incorporate a sensitive urban design approach. Each with its own identity, the two hotels work aesthetically and functionally, anchoring a popular new esplanade while also taking into account the Metro station across the street.
