Census data revealed that over 53,000 households in San Diego lack broadband access. Last year the department of IT created a Digital Equity Working Group that created a new program called SD Access 4 All. The program expanded Wi-Fi access at over 300 locations across the City, provided hundreds of devices for the public to check out, and created a digital literacy program for the community. The Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans’ (MPI) participants include 29 unions, most people behind the camera. Many abruptly lost their jobs in March 2020 due to COVID. MPI’s Board decided to add a new benefit enabling participants to withdraw funds, a hardship withdrawal. The resultant project entailed changes to two systems, real-time data and computational interfaces, an online adaptive interview creating a form and a robot to email and file the form. This very fast five-week project enabled over 7,600 participants to withdraw over $109 million in relief, in some cases saving homes from foreclosure.
