Broadcast Facilities Inc. said Thursday that it had acquired the satellite services division of Crawford Communications Inc. to expand its outsourced broadcasting services to major broadcasters and media companies.
The transaction combines the Los Angeles company’s Andrita Media Center, considered the largest independent high- and standard-definition network origination, production, post production and digital media facility on the West Coast, with Atlanta-based Crawford’s East Coast business, which includes television network origination, teleport, satellite uplink trucks, Internet, production services, and media services to government clients.
“Our full-time network clients now have a valuable back-up location as well as a West Coast point-of-presence,” Jim Schuster, Broadcast Facilities executive vice president, said in a press release.
Broadcast Facilities was formed in 2008 by Simon Bax, Bill Tillson and Wasserstein & Co. to acquire and operate broadcast media facilities in the United States, Asia and Europe. The deal, whose terms were not disclosed, was financed by Wasserstein, which has offices in Los Angeles and New York City, and Tennenbaum Capital Partners LLC, a Santa Monica private equity firm.
The combined company’s client base includes ABC, NBC Universal and MGM. Government clients include the U.S. Department of Defense, NASA, and the Centers for Disease Control.
“We are very pleased to bring these two market leaders together to create a company that is ideally positioned to take advantage of current market dynamics, including the proliferation of channels, the transition to HD and the desire of broadcasters to outsource facilities to reduce fixed costs,” Ellis Jones, Wasserstein’s chief executive and Broadcast Facilities’ chairman, said in a press release.
