Satellite TV provider DirectTV plans to launch the first 3D high-definition television channel in the United States early next year, according an industry online blog.

The El Segundo company plans to make the announcement on Jan. 7 at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, according to HDGuru.com. The new channel reportedly will include movies, sports and other programming in 3D. To view programs, customers will need one of the new 3D televisions expected to debut at CES, as well as compatible 3D glasses.

DirectTV has not confirmed the report, but on Tuesday did announce the successful launch of its DirecTV 12 satellite. The satellite will boost the company’s HD capacity by 50 percent to more than 200 HD channels, increase the number of local HD markets it can serve, and significantly expand movie choices at its Cinema and On Demand services, it said.

The satellite, launched from Kazakhstan, was built at Boeing’s Space and Intelligence Systems division in El Segundo.

Shares were down 7 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $33.86 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.
