The Don Knabe Wellness Center and Plaza plays a critical role at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, one of the nation’s top hospitals for rehabilitative medicine. The new facility is equipped with a therapy swimming pool that has an underwater treadmill, weightlifting room, dance studio, cardio and yoga room. For patients, the 13,000 square foot space offers a bit of everything, even a meditative garden, where they can relax after a game of wheelchair basketball or a workout in the gym with equipment specially designed for people in wheelchairs. The integrated team of McCarthy, Taylor Design and SmithGroupJJR collaborated to create Rancho Los Amigos’ new wellness center with state-of-the-art design and construction in under one year. While all healthcare environments aim to create healing spaces, this project moves beyond soothing colors and soft contours to a space that celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit.
