Billionaire Platinum Equity founder Tom Gores is looking to expand his sports holdings in Detroit.
The Pistons owner, who was born in Flint, Mich., announced a partnership with Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert to bring an expansion Major League Soccer franchise to the city.
Gilbert is from Detroit and his Quicken Loans Inc. is headquartered there.
The pair’s efforts are supported by MLS and its commissioner Don Garber, according to a joint statement from Gores and Gilbert.
“I’m excited to partner with Dan and help in Detroit’s resurgence,” said Gores, in the statement. “Together we have all the tools we need to make a new team successful.”
Major League Soccer has announced plans to eventually expand to 28 teams. The league has 20 teams now with 24 slotted for inclusion by 2020. New franchises include Los Angeles Football Club along with teams in Atlanta and Minnesota.
Gores and Gilbert are both graduates of Michigan State University. Incidentally, Gilbert’s Cavaliers swept Gores’ Pistons in the first round of this year’s NBA playoffs.
