GODS OF EGYPT – Business empires are full of succession battles and so were ancient kingdoms as seen in this sword-and-sandals epic with fantasy elements. Two brothers battle to control Ancient Egypt and one gains the upper hand by ripping the other one’s eyes out and locking him away. But he doesn’t kill him – and that’s the mistake. The blind brother escapes and goes on a revenge mission. On an Oscar weekend when Hollywood’s focus is very much on issues of diversity (or lack thereof), here’s a film which presents Ancient Egypt as populated mainly by white people. Among them are the movie’s stars: Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Geoffrey Rush.
EDDIE THE EAGLE – A plumber with big ambitions dreams of changing his life by competing in the Winter Olympics as a ski jumper – despite being absolutely useless at the sport. When no one else will take him seriously, he turns to a washed-up, ex-Olympian working as a snow plow driver to train him. Together these underdogs become a team not to be counted out. Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton star.
TRIPLE 9 – Kate Winslet stars as a ruthless Russian mafia boss who hires a bunch of freelance criminals and corrupt cops to commit a major robbery on her behalf. Her ruthless strategy involves ordering her henchmen to kill as many cops as possible, hence the film’s title, which is the police code for “officer down.” Woody Harrelson, Aaron Paul and Chiwetel Ejiofor also star.
