The California Film Commission announced Wednesday that 13 new feature films, including 10 studio productions and three independent productions, were earmarked for the state’s expanded Film and Television Tax Credit Program in its second round of selections.

The highest profile productions – also receiving the largest tax credits – include a Warner Bros. remake of “A Star is Born” starring Beyonce and directed by Bradley Cooper (for $8.9 million in tax credits) and Disney family comedy “Overnight on 42nd Street” ($9.5 million).

“These two films are excellent examples of how this program can help our state retain bigger budget studio film productions,” said Amy Lemisch, executive director of the California Film Commission. “We hope this is a sign that the tide is turning, and there will be more major studio films that will shoot in California in the future.”

During the fourth application period for the recently expanded tax credit program, staged in January, 174 productions vied for $53.9 million in tax credits.

The 13 projects that made the cut will generate an estimated $400 million in direct in-state spending, including $174 million in wages to more than 2,000 below-the-line crew members. Additionally, they will employ an estimated 540 cast members.

Projects are ranked by wages to below-the-line workers as well as qualified spending on vendors, equipment and other criteria. The list may be revised, as applicants may withdraw from the program and their tax credits reassigned to those on the wait list.

The tax credit program applies the term “independent” to projects produced by a company that is not publicly-traded.
