The $5 billion Landside Access Modernization Project, one of the largest construction endeavors in Los Angeles history, promises to revolutionize road and rail access to the Los Angeles International Airport and serve as the cornerstone for the airport, the Daily Breeze reported Friday.

The project will include an elevated 2.25-mile automated people mover with a capacity of 6,000 passengers an hour and six stations where people are expected to wait no more than three minutes for a train. The people mover will connect LAX terminals with a Crenshaw Line light rail station at 96th Street and Aviation Boulevard and two intermodal transportation facilities with parking lots where airline passengers can get off trains and buses and check in to their flights.

L.A. city officials told about 900 business leaders Thursday that LAX is on a “new trajectory” because of the project. It is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2017 and finish by 2023.
