Thanks to a nod from SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Century City’s AECOM is on the fast track to being a player the future of high-speed ground transportation.

The infrastructure firm announced Tuesday that it was selected to design and build the world’s first Hyperloop test track as part of the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition, a university-focused challenge to help spur student innovation.

The above-ground track will function as a vacuum-sealed, high-speed proving ground for transporting pod prototypes now being developed as part of a SpaceX design competition. Design efforts for the test track are underway, with a goal of construction beginning this spring.

Hyperloop, a high-speed transport proposed by Musk, would function through a network of low-pressure tubes and air-cushioned pods traveling at speeds of up to 760 miles per hour. The test track will run nearly one mile adjacent to SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne.
