The Hope Street Parklet opens Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. It is the first parklet – or small park – commissioned by the city Department of Transportation’s People Street Program, designed to create more public space, according to LA Downtown News.
The South Park Business Improvement District was one of the first groups to apply under the program, according to BID Executive Director Jessica Lall, who estimated the cost of the parklet at $60,000 to $70,000. She said most of the money came from sponsorships and private donations. The parklet, located on the southwest corner of Hope and 11th streets, will feature trees and seating.
The ceremony takes place from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at 1111 S. Hope Street in downtown Los Angeles, and City Councilman Jose Huizar and LADOT General Manager Seleta Reynolds are expected to attend.
