The Dow Jones industrial average fell five points in Thursday trading to close at 17,746.

The S&P 500 was flat at 2,109.

The Nasdaq rose 17 points to 5,129.

The LABJ Stock Index rose one point to 244.

Gainers and Losers

Thursday’s biggest local gainer was Manhattan Beach footwear company Skechers USA Inc. Its shares rose 16 percent on the day, closing at $148.99, after the company announced better-than-expected earnings.

Thursday’s biggest loser was BreitBurn Energy Partners LP. Shares of the Los Angeles oil partnership fell 14 percent on the day, closing at $3.29.
