Snapchat Targets Sports League Partnerships

Venice’s Snapchat Inc. is planning to include live sports broadcasts in its app, beginning with the NCAA Basketball tournament later this month, according to a report.

The move is another example of Snapchat’s attempt to expand its platform into a hub for digital content of all types.

According to the story from Digiday, Snapchat plans to establish media-rights deals with sports leagues and broadcast networks, including the NCAA and Atlanta’s Turner Broadcasting System Inc.

The article cites “multiple media executives familiar with the plans” as sources.

A Snapchat spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

The arrangement would allow Snapchat to include live basketball coverage in its “Our Story” feature, according to Digiday. The newsfeed stories would only include user-generated content, but league approval would avoid potential legal headaches.

Snapchat would then sell ads around the stories and share proceeds with its partners. Similar deals are reportedly being sought with other sports leagues, but not necessarily with television broadcasters, the story said.

In January, Snapchat launched its “Discover” feature, which lets media outlets host channels that cover news, stories and other narratives through videos and photos. Partnered outlets announced so far include CNN, Vice, Yahoo News, People, National Geographic, Comedy Central, Food Network and ESPN.
