Sony to Release ‘The Interview’ After All

Sony Pictures Entertainment will be releasing controversial film “The Interview” in theaters on Christmas Day after all.

The headline-hitting comedy will get a limited release in an unspecified number of arthouse and independent movie theaters across the country, studio executives said Tuesday.

“We have never given up on releasing ‘The Interview’ and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day,” said Michael Lynton, chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment. “At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience.”

He went on to say the studio is proud to be releasing the film and “to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech.”

The studio had come under heavy criticism for its Dec. 17 decision to scrap release plans for the film – about American journalists trying to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un – in the wake of a cyberattack attack that plunged Sony into crisis. President Obama called the release cancellation “a mistake.”

But following today’s about face, co-star and co-director of “The Interview” Seth Rogen took to Twitter to celebrate. “The people have spoken! Freedom has prevailed!,”he tweeted.

Among the movie theaters set to premiere the movie on Christmas Day is the Alamo Drafthouse in Texas. “This is the best Christmas gift anyone would give us…I am proud to be an American,” said the theater’s founder, Tim League, in a statement.
