Elon Musk’s SpaceX will unveil the Dragon V2, its first manned spaceship, Thursday night at its Hawthorne headquarters.
The current Dragon model manufactured by SpaceX is used by NASA to ferry cargo to the international space station. The government agency wants to use the Dragon V2 to transport humans to the space station by 2018 at the latest.
NASA paid SpaceX, Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp. a combined $1.1 billion in 2012 to develop small ships, including the Dragon V2, that can carry human beings into space. SpaceX received $440 million of that amount.
The aerospace company will also live stream the event, which includes a press briefing, on its website.
