When Myspace veteran Chris DeWolfe wanted to break into the online gaming industry, he teamed with two other Myspace co-founders to acquire social game company MindJolt in 2010.
A year later, the company acquired Social Gaming Network to enter the mobile gaming space and changed its name to SGN.
The company has continued its acquisition strategy, this time scooping up Carlsbad mobile game developer Mob Science and its 11 employees. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Mob Science is known for “Legends: Rise of a Hero,” a game where players try to rescue a captured princess by slaying monsters.
Beleaguered mobile gaming company Zynga has previously published Mob Science’s titles. DeWolfe told the Business Journal that SGN might continue to have Zynga publish the games or might take over the publishing.
SGN will keep Mob Science’s offices in Carlsbad, adding to the company’s offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
SGN’s titles now include “Fluff Friends Rescue” and “Panda Jam.” The company creates its games so that they can be played online through social networks such as Facebook or via mobile devices.
DeWolfe said he has tried to avoid some of the challenges that Zynga has faced, namely growing too quickly to sustain its size.
Currently, SGN has more than 80 employees. DeWolfe said the company wants to see that a game is a success before growing its team.
“Less is more from a human capital perspective,” he said. “You don’t want to be too big.”
