As Santa Monica tech incubator Science Inc. continues to add new companies to its portfolio, it’s also growing its management roster.
Science announced Monday that it hired Jason Rapp as managing director.
Through his role at Science, Rapp said he will “help the existing portfolio companies grow and help Science look and new investments to make and new companies to buy.”
Rapp, who left his post as president of Mahalo.com, the video tutorial startup founded by Jason Calacanis, late last year, has also served as chief executive of Gifts.com and ran mergers and acquisitions for its parent, IAC, during that time.
Rapp also spends his time advising startups. During the six-month gap between his gigs at Mahalo and Science, he was consulting with startups in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
Science, run by Mike Jones, the former Myspace chief executive, boasts a portfolio of nearly a dozen companies. They range from subscription e-commerce companies Dollar Shave Club and Wittlebee to pet boarding service DogVacay.
Rapp said he was drawn to Science because he enjoys consulting with young companies and helping them evolve.
“I’ve been around a lot of startups, either running them or investing in them, and I like that approach that Mike has taken,” Rapp said. “Science has a perspective that is smart and that I’m attracted to.”
