Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich announced Friday that Michael McNeilly’s Sky Tag Inc. has agree to pay $1.2 million in civil penalties to settle a long-standing supergraphic billboard dispute with the city.
Trutanich sued the Los Angeles company in 2011, alleging violations of numerous city building and safety codes, including creating and maintaining public nuisances and hazardous conditions in buildings by having windows covered or “wrapped” with large vinyl supergraphics.
Sky Tag at the time had lease agreements for supergraphic signage with 17 properties, and 21 additional defendants have agreed to the settlement, the city said. McNeilly has been the most visible and vocal defenders of supergraphics, gaining notoriety in 2009 for installing huge images of the Statue of Liberty on office buildings in Hollywood, the Miracle Mile and the Westside.
“This settlement is a victory for Los Angeles residents,” Trutanich said in a statement. “People need to know that public safety laws will be enforced, if necessary in a court of law, to ensure that everyone is held accountable to the same rules and regulations.”
