Analyst upgrades and brighter earning boosted some local stocks while poor earnings and short selling stung others.

On the losing end was Van Nuys-based clothing manufacture Cherokee Inc., which lost 11 percent for the week after reporting dips in both first quarter profit and sales. Shares closed at $43.11.
