SpaceX Reschedules Space Station Run to Tuesday

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. said it will try again tomorrow to launch the first private space craft on a cargo run to the International Space Station. A Saturday lift off was scrubbed for technical reasons.

SpaceX, a Hawthorne commercial rocket and spacecraft firm founded by technology mogul Elon Musk, said that it fixed an engine problem that prompted the weekend delay. The company’s Dragon capsule is filled with 1,000 pounds of food and other provisions that will be launched into orbit atop the company’s Falcon 9 rocket

“During rigorous inspections of the engine, SpaceX engineers discovered a faulty check valve on the Merlin engine,” the company said in a statement on its web site. “If things look good, we will be ready to attempt to launch on Tuesday, May 22 at (12:44 am Pacific).”

If the launch at Cape Canaveral, Fla. goes as planned, the SpaceX spacecraft will reach the space station on Thursday, undergo a series of practice maneuvers and then be retrieved by the station’s 58-foot robot arm on Friday.

The Business Journal this week added Musk, the co-founder of PayPal, to its annual Wealthiest Angelenos list, with an estimated net worth of $2 billion. He ranks 24th of 50 individuals and couples on the list.
