Imports at the Port of Los Angeles in October were just below September’s levels, but by two other measures exports and total container volume the port set records for the month.

The L.A. port reported that more than 412,000 20-foot equivalent containers came into the port in October, a 12-percent hike over last year and second only to September’s record of 425,473.

However, the number of outbound loaded containers hit an all-time high of 131,335 containers, a 33 percent increase year over year and a 6 percent jump from last month’s record of 124,000. Many of the containers are loaded with cotton, recycled plastics and paper, bails of hay, machines parts and other various items.

October also saw an all-time high in total number of containers handled, which hit 800,063. Total container volume includes loaded and empty inbound and outbound containers. This year alone, the Los Angeles port has moved more than 700,000 containers for five straight months.

The Port of Long Beach also saw a big jump in imports and export volume. October saw a 12-percent jump in loaded inbound containers to 335,688, the second-highest total ever behind August’s 347,000. The Long Beach port handled a total of 650,726 containers for the month, a close second to August’s total of 675,058.

Exports also saw an increase when compared to last year, jumping 5.7 percent, to 109,318.
