Accounting services firm RSM McGladrey Inc. has promoted Steve Cabrera to tax services manager. Previously, Cabrera was a tax services supervisor with the firm.

Ryan Co., a tax services business based in Dallas, has named Bill LaVere director, Kathy Cardenas senior consultant, and Allyson Sedlak and Tricia Torres consultants in the firm’s downtown L.A. office. Previously, LaVere was an executive vice president at Countrywide Financial Corp. Cardenas was administrative assistant at Fairplex. Sedlak is a graduate of USC’s Marshall School of Business. Torres is a graduate of the University of Miami.

Encino-based marketing firm Inter/Media Group of Cos. has named Cole Hartman senior vice president of marketing. Previously, Hartman was western region vice president at Horizon Media, a New York-based communications firm.

The downtown L.A. office of architecture firm Leo A Daly has named Joseph L. Calvarese regional director of federal programs. Previously, Calvarese was western federal director of HDR Architecture in Phoenix.

BANKING & FINANCE

HSBC Bank has promoted Michael K. McShane to regional commercial executive in its downtown L.A. office, covering the bank’s California market. Previously, McShane was commercial executive covering the Southern California market.

CONSTRUCTION

Amcal General Contractors Inc., an L.A. construction firm, has named Emery J. Comerford vice president of construction. Previously, Comerford was president of Coury Enterprises Inc., a Woodland Hills-based construction contractor.

EDUCATION

The USC Marshall School of Business has named Robert Hermanns director of food industry programs. Previously, Hermanns was a senior vice president at Park City Group, a Park City, Utah-based developer of business services software.

Fox Cable Networks in Century City has named Sherry Brennan senior vice president of sales strategy and development. Previously, Brennan was a vice president of sales strategy and development.

Prime Focus, a visual entertainment services firm, has named O.D. Welch chief operating officer, North America, in its Hollywood office. Previously, Welch was president of the entertainment group at Evolve Consulting in Los Angeles.

Law firm Davis Wright Tremaine LLP has named Ryan D. Derry an associate in the firm’s downtown L.A. office. Previously, Derry was an associate in the downtown L.A. office of Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker LLP.

The Association of Media & Entertainment Counsel, a Century City-based trade association, has named Alan Friel chairman of the law firm advisory board, Andy Levin chairman of the leadership advisory board and Christian Vance to the emerging leaders board. Friel is a partner at Chicago-based Wildman Harrold Allen & Dixon LLP. Levin is executive vice president and chief legal officer at San Antonio-based Clear Channel Communications Inc. Great Beginnings for Black Babies, an Inglewood non-profit organization, has named Rae Jones executive director. Jones is founder of communications firm Raediant Communications.

The Screen Actors Guild, a labor union representing working actors in recorded media, has named David P. White national executive director and chief negotiator. Previously, White was managing principal at Entertainment Strategies Group LLC, a Beverly Hills-based entertainment industry.

SparksFly Public Relations, a Miracle Mile firm specializing in the video game industry, has named Chip Garamella senior account manager. Previously, Garamella was founder of entertainment ad agency BGAD

Los Angeles Times Media Group has named Nancie Clare editor of the Los Angeles Times Magazine. Previously, Clare was a deputy editor at the magazine.

KUDOS

Invest in Others Charitable Foundation and InvestmentNews magazine have presented Brett S. Ellen with the community leadership award in the mentoring excellence category. Ellen, chief executive of Calabasas-based financial services firm American Financial Network, was honored for his work with Turn Kindness On – Helping Hands, a Calabasas non-profit promoting social responsibility among young children.

The Institute of Medicine, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that provides advice on national health issues, has elected Roger J. Lewis as a member. Lewis, a principal investigator at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, was elected by the institute’s current members, who recognize “individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of medical sciences, health care and public health,” according to a statement.
