The state Democratic party not only saw its candidate Gray Davis elected governor during last week’s election, it also picked up a handful of additional seats in the state Assembly, thus solidifying its control over the Legislature. So the Business Journal asks,
Are you concerned about having a single party dominating state government?

I think it’s great. I am a Democrat so I don’t have any worries about the Democrats dominating.

Knowing what I know about it, I wouldn’t call it so much a domination. People’s perceptions generally sway one way or the other for good reason. The Republicans have had their chance and the people have spoken. Now the Democrats are getting their chance.

I would have no problem with that at all, if it were the Republican party.

It doesn’t. In the case of the Democrats this year, they were so successful because they maintained a moderate, centrist position and that was the message they took out on the stump. Hopefully they will have learned from that, and understand that if they veer to the left, they will lose the vast middle that elected them this year and be right back where they were in 1994. I don’t have any concerns right now, partly because I’m a Democrat, and I was pleased to see the party prevail.

I’m a cross voter myself, and I’m not concerned. There have been many times in the past, in various states and in the federal government, where there has been single-party control. We certainly have the opportunity in the future to change that. I think this will be an interesting opportunity to see what one party can or can’t do with the power and responsibility that they have for the next several years.

Someone has to be in the majority, right? It’s essentially a reflection of the will of the people, and if that is the case, so be it.

My feelings are based on the fact that Gray Davis is more of a centrist at least that was the platform he was running on. If nothing else, it’s probable that with him in the governorship and his party dominating the state government, we will actually see some work getting done, instead of having the two parties just fighting between themselves.
